Sticking to a good skincare routine is the best way to keep your skin feeling and looking healthy as you age. At first, getting into the habit of caring for your skin can be challenging, but once you get into a routine, it gets a lot easier.

You may wonder if it’s a good idea to switch up your routine when the seasons change. Your basic skincare routine doesn’t need to change drastically along with the seasons.

But there are small changes you can make to better suit your skin’s slightly different needs in different seasons. These small changes can help keep your skin healthy all year round!

How Do I Find a Skincare Routine?

Your skincare routine should be unique to you and your unique skin. But there are a few things that should be a part of everyone’s skincare routine:

  • Cleanser
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen

You need a way to clean your skin, keep it from getting dried out, and protect it from harmful UV radiation. Depending on your age and skin type, you may also want to add other things to your skincare routine, like certain serums, retinoids, or toners.

But these three basics are the core of a good skincare routine. This core routine doesn’t need to change much as the seasons do, but it can be modified a little to better accommodate your skin in different kinds of weather.

How the Seasons Can Affect Your Skin

When the seasons change, it doesn’t just get hotter or colder. Autumn and Winter are definitely colder than Spring and Summer, but they’re also a lot drier.

The cold weather makes the air drier, which can have a significant effect on your skin. This effect is especially noticeable if you have naturally dry skin.

When it comes to the warmer seasons, while the air tends to be less dry, your skin also may be exposed to more sunlight. In the summer, it’s often sunny, and you also tend to wear less clothing, so more of your skin is exposed.

Then, certain things, like allergies, come with each season that can affect your skin. Spring and sometimes Autumn come with a lot of pollen in the air, and if you’re allergic to pollen, it can irritate your skin.

How to Modify Your Skincare During Different Seasons

You can benefit greatly from changing your skincare routine between seasons to accommodate how the seasons affect your skin differently. Exactly what changes you should make depends on your skin type and specific needs.

However, there are a few general tips about how to modify the three main elements of a basic skincare routine between seasons— cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

Cleanser

As it gets colder, you may need a more moisturizing, creamy cleanser. You can transition to a creamier cleanser in the fall to help prepare your skin for the harsher dryness of the winter.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, it may also be helpful to use a gentle cleanser, although using a gentle cleanser all year long is also a good idea. Be sure to use a cleanser free of sulfates and dyes, especially if you have sensitive skin in general.

During allergy season, you can also be more mindful of washing your skin to get rid of pollen and other allergens.

Moisturizer

Again, drier air in cooler months means you should moisturize more. In the Spring and Summer, you can use a gel-based moisturizer that will give you the moisture you need for the heat but still be lightweight.

Then, when it turns to Autumn, you can switch to a cream moisturizer that locks in more moisture.

Sunscreen

You should use sunscreen as part of your morning skincare routine all year. It’s more important to use in sunny weather, but even when it gets very cold in the winter, there can still be a lot of sunlight during the day.

Make sure you apply at least 30 SPF to your face every morning as well as any places where you have exposed skin and refresh whenever you’re outside for longer than an hour. Remember that skin damage from UV light is the number one cause of cancer and the number one contributor to wrinkles as you get older, so protect yourself!

Avoid sun tanning altogether, whether it’s in a tanning bed or by the pool.

Take Your Skincare to the Next Level This Autumn

As Summer comes to a close, your skin may be damaged from time spent enjoying the sunny weather. And as Autumn begins, you may also have a lot of dry, itchy skin.

This makes Autumn a great time to exfoliate. If you want to take exfoliation to the next level, you should consider a chemical peel
