Lip injections are a minimally invasive way that is increasingly popular to subtly enhance the appearance of your lips. However, if you have very thin lips, you may be concerned that you can’t have lip injections.

The good news is that you can actually have lip injections even if your lips are very thin! There are some limitations, however.

To better understand those limitations and what they can do for you, keep reading to learn more about lip injections and how they work!

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip injections, or lip fillers, are a type of dermal filler. Dermal fillers are an injectable, biocompatible substance that can add volume to the face.

They can be used to smooth out wrinkles and deep creases, fill out cheeks, and plump out the lips. Different kinds of fillers are used for different purposes, although many types of fillers can be used for multiple purposes.

Lip fillers are usually made of hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that naturally occurs in the body. This is what allows the filler to be biocompatible, as the body easily accepts it and integrates it into the skin since it’s recognized as part of the body.

Biocompatibility also helps fillers look natural. But your lips will look more natural if they’re injected correctly by an experienced technician.

How Lip Injections Can Plump Your Lips

Patients who get lip injections often have thin lips or lips that have lost volume due to aging. As you get older, you tend to lose volume in your face as fat, muscle, and other tissue breaks down.

However, it’s also normal to just have naturally thin lips. Regardless, the goal of lip injections is not to make your lips look bigger and plumper.

Lips that are injected to simply look larger tend to look unnatural.  The goal of lip injection is to make the lips appear more naturally plump.

The best way to do this is to add volume in a way that enhances the existing shape of the lips. Specifically, that usually means making sure the bottom lip is slightly fuller than the top lip,

while still making sure the top lip protrudes slightly more than the bottom lip in profile.

This is considered the ideal lip appearance and can usually be achieved regardless of how big your lips are naturally.

Can Fillers Help Thin Lips?

If your lips are quite thin, you can still have lip injections. They simply won’t be able to get as much filler injected.

But this is a good thing, as too much filler, regardless of your lip size, looks unnatural. Your injector needs to follow the proportions of your lips so the added filler makes them look natural.

If your lips are very thin, this does take a bit of skill on your technician’s part, as there’s less room to work with. Thinner lips have a smaller area to fill, and the skin also has less stretch, so care is required to make sure they aren’t overfilled.

If you have thin or small lips, lip injections won’t magically make them bigger. But an experienced injector will be able to make them look fuller and more plump, enhancing their natural appearance!

What Else Can Lip Filler Do?

In addition to making the lips look fuller, fillers also can smooth out vertical lip lines and change the contour of the lips to look more aesthetically pleasing, with more pucker. If you want, fillers can also slightly widen your mouth.

If you want your lips to look fuller and more naturally plump, chances are you’ll be a great candidate for lip fillers. But you should also be in overall good health and a non-smoker.

You should also understand that fillers are not permanent. Fillers are naturally processed out of your body, so the results don’t last forever.

However, fillers can last for a while. Lip fillers tend to last at least a year, so getting repeat injections to maintain your appearance is quite easy.

This is especially true as lip injections are non-surgical and require no recovery time. They can also be given in a matter of minutes, so having lip injections can be very convenient!

The fact that lip injections aren’t permanent also makes them an excellent choice for those who are nervous about permanently altering their appearance. Lip injections aren’t a huge commitment because they’ll eventually wear off.

However, if you love your results, you can maintain their results by getting regular treatments.

Love Your Lips More

Getting lip injections isn’t about hating the way your lips look— it’s about making you love them more! If you’re self-conscious about your thin lips, lip injections are an easy, non-surgical way to give you that boost of confidence.
